To enjoy the tranquil landscape of Sri Lanka, there is no better place than Nuwara Eliya, also known as tea country. The beautiful scenery is reminiscent of the English countryside and is the top spot for wealthy residents from around Sri Lanka to visit during the holidays. The location is ideal for golf and holds the country’s tennis tournaments. While on the hillside, visit the Hill Club, which is like taking a step into an English TV series with its picturesque greenery and gentleman’s clubhouse feel. There is a strict dress code here – guys must wear jackets to the dinner table.

There are many hotel options in the city – many still resemble English countryside getaways. I explored a few places even though I was there during their busiest season, full of tournaments and special events. An amazing place to stay is the historic mansion, Jetwing St. Andrew’s, built equipped with the colonial luxury once enjoyed during the British rule.

Since it is tea country, a visit to the Heritance Tea Company is in order. Those who love tea will appreciate the beautiful architecture of the hotel, which was once a tea factory, and stunning views of tea plantations – what better souvenir than to pluck your own tea leaves? Try dining in a historic railway carriage with waiter in full character as train operator – a fun experience.
